And then, what?
You made it
Your accolades glimmer
In the morning sun
As they hang on the wall
Opposite the guest bathroom
So all can stare at them after
a Nice, meaty shit.
And then, what?
After all those years
Paying strangers to
Raise your kids
Passing out over
Contracts and spreadsheets
Laughing at unfunny jokes
That the assholes at work
Pretend to be charming with
And then, what?
You paid your dues
You made the sacrifice
You nailed yourself to the cross
And the Rolls Royce sits
Outside, undriven
While the nurse jams a
Catheter in your urethra so
You can take your morning piss.
And then, what?
You peek out the bedroom window
The neighbor’s kids laugh
Chasing each other with
A careless amount of
Confidence,
and you smile
A rueful smile.
Those kids are so rich
And you have
Failed at
Life.
