The addict lives in a constantly permutating state of mind. Sometimes it feels like there are two different people living inside the same body; a kind, noble and kind human being, and a monster that cares about nothing else but the next hit. The noble human thinks he is strong enough to control the monster, but the monster always seems to win.
It is the apotheosis of a mind inflicted by a warrior and its foe.
